Unblock Puzzle is the sliding-block problem in its purest form: a crowded grid, a target block, and one exit. Blocks slide only along their own length - horizontal ones left and right, vertical ones up and down - and the target has to reach the opening. Nothing is hidden and there is no timer, so every level is entirely a question of thinking rather than doing. What makes it consistently harder than it looks is that the moves are not independent. Freeing the target usually means moving a block that is blocking a block that is blocking the target, and the space to do that has to be created three or four moves earlier. Levels are built so that the first move that seems obvious is often the one that closes the only route. The satisfying part is that solutions are exact: there is a minimum number of moves for each board, and getting close to it feels quite different from simply getting out.
How to Play Unblock Puzzle
Drag a block along its own axis - horizontal blocks move left and right, vertical blocks move up and down. Blocks cannot rotate and cannot pass through one another. Clear a path for the target block and slide it out through the opening. There is no move limit and no timer.
Tips and Tricks
Work backwards from the exit. Ask which block has to move for the target to leave, then which block has to move for that one, and you will usually find the whole sequence.
Notice which blocks can only move one square. They are effectively fixed, and treating them as walls simplifies the board considerably.
Empty space is the real resource. Before making a move, ask whether it opens a gap you need later or fills the only one you had.
If you are stuck after a dozen moves, reset rather than continuing. A board that has been shuffled is much harder to read than the starting position.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the blocks move?
Only along their own length. A horizontal block slides left and right, a vertical one up and down, and nothing rotates or passes through anything else.
Is there a time limit or move limit?
Neither. The puzzle waits indefinitely, which is appropriate - almost all of the work is thinking rather than moving.
Does every level have a solution?
Yes, and each has a minimum number of moves. Solving a board is the requirement; solving it near the minimum is the actual challenge.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. There is no reading, no timer and nothing to lose, and the rules can be understood in a few seconds.
Do I need to download it?
No. Unblock Puzzle runs in the browser on GN Math and works by dragging with a mouse or a finger.
